Simultaneously Improving Access, Pedagogy, and Instructor Autonomy: UW's Move from H.323 to Zoom

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Session description: For twenty-five years, the University of Wyoming utilized H.323 video-conferencing to deliver video-based, distance courses. During that time, this deeply entrenched technology went from something that seemed like a miracle, worth any cost, to being onerous, overly expensive, and finally(!) very replaceable. As the instructional designer directly responsible for our video-based classes and the liaison between those faculty, the staff who scheduled the rooms and the technicians who supported the equipment I ended up being the primary advocate and facilitator in our move to abandon H.323 and adopt Zoom as a full-on replacement. This presentation is about that process--in particular the needs that led to it and the search for and implementation of a solution.

Session Outcomes: Upon completion of this session, attendees will be able to:
1) Understand the many advantages cloud-based web-conferencing has over room based H.323 video-conferencing;
2) Initiate a conversation about making a similar change at their own institution;
3) Schedule/initiate a Zoom conference
