Leveraging technology to innovate undergraduate education: Designing hybrid courses

Session Description: Teacher preparation programs face multiple challenges, from decreasing enrollment to access. We have the technologies to address these challenges, but the solutions are not without issue. One of these solutions is to implement hybrid methods courses that allow preservice teachers to engage in their final stages of preparation from any location. This approach requires a blending of traditional face to face courses with video conference technology and full integration of the campus learning management sharing to engage these learners and model good distance learning practices. However, careful planning of such an approach must address interactivity, engagement of learners to avoid creating a divided classroom culture, and effective audio/video solutions.

Upon completion of this session, attendees will be able to:
1. Identify suitable technologies for video conference delivery to support a hybrid course
2. Describe practices for using a learning management system to facilitate access to course materials and engagement
3. Develop an action plan to replicate this approach locally
4. Discuss potential challenges that might be encountered locally when replicating this approach
