Hands-on Coding, Real-time Fun
Session Description: As NWCCD (Sheridan and Gillette Colleges) and its school district partners develop our approach to K-14 Computer science education, we use a combination of:
  • structured learning environments such as Snap, Scratch, MIT App Inventor, Code.org, CodeCombat.com, and CodeHS.com
  • “blank page” coding environments, such as C9.io, and
  • experiential learning exercises that start students off with working code, often a game, that draws them into learning by allowing them to make (and break) the code in many small ways.
  • Come join us for a session of “learning play”, using some of our “low friction” online coding environments. You’ll get to make-and-break-and-fix your own copy of at least one simple online game. You’ll emerge having successfully hacked a small amount JavaScript and, we hope, had some fun along the way. No bits or bytes will be permanently harmed by this exercise!

Session Outcomes: Upon completion of this session, attendees will be able to:
1. Find and use two or three different online coding environments that provide a rich library of learning-ready content.
2. Identify, understand, and appreciate some the basic building blocks of all coding: variables, if/then statements, and loops. You might even meet an object along the way!
3. Increase your personal geek score a couple of points.

GoFormative: An Immediate Assessment and Feedback Tool
Session Description:  Most online assessments require participants to “Submit” their assessments before a teacher gets to look at the data. This often leaves a lag time between what the student did and when the teacher can give feedback.  GoFormative is an assessment tool where students do not need to click on submit before the teacher can see what the student is doing in REAL TIME. In this presentation you will learn the functionality of the tool as it relates to virtual and classroom assessments. You will learn the power of the question choices such as the show your work feature where students are able to type, draw, or write a response even on a graphic organizer. Participants will leave the session with ready to use assessments that they can implement immediately.

Session Outcomes: Upon completion of this session, attendees will be able to:
1. Create and assign a GoFormative assessment.
2. Create multiple types of questions for formative assessment
3. Know how to provide instant feedback

Simultaneously Improving Access, Pedagogy, and Instructor Autonomy: UW's Move from H.323 to Zoom
Session description: For twenty-five years, the University of Wyoming utilized H.323 video-conferencing to deliver video-based, distance courses. During that time, this deeply entrenched technology went from something that seemed like a miracle, worth any cost, to being onerous, overly expensive, and finally(!) very replaceable. As the instructional designer directly responsible for our video-based classes and the liaison between those faculty, the staff who scheduled the rooms and the technicians who supported the equipment I ended up being the primary advocate and facilitator in our move to abandon H.323 and adopt Zoom as a full-on replacement. This presentation is about that process--in particular the needs that led to it and the search for and implementation of a solution.

Session Outcomes: Upon completion of this session, attendees will be able to:
1) Understand the many advantages cloud-based web-conferencing has over room based H.323 video-conferencing;
2) Initiate a conversation about making a similar change at their own institution;
3) Schedule/initiate a Zoom conference

Spiralling in Practice
Session Description: One of many concepts in education that has become somewhat of a buzzword is the concept of Spiralling. Like many concepts in our field, there is a wide range of interpretations and misconceptions associated with this instructional strategy. I intend to address these misconceptions and clarify the interpretations to demonstrate the huge impact Spiralling can have on student learning.         Attendees will explore lessons, activities, and curriculum pacing to identify standards that can be addressed using a spiralled approach within independent activities or lessons, over time. In this how to session, attendees will have an opportunity to consider their own lessons and curriculum to identify areas where Spiralling is already used or can be effectively implemented over the course of any given school year.
Session Outcomes: Upon completion of this session, attendees will be able to:
1. effectively plan lessons that incorporate a variety of strategies that address multiple standards,
2. eliminate the habit of a “chunked” curriculum delivery, and
3. teach not only to proficiency, but to long term retention.
