Joseph Kozlowski

Joey Kozlowski is an enthusiastic teacher who has taught for the past 4 years in Sheridan County School District #1. He recently completed his masters degree in middle level mathematics and is in the process of applying to schools for PhD work in mathematics education. His passion is teaching elementary mathematics and he loves to evaluate student misconceptions. Being able to identify these misconceptions and construct lessons that target them is always such a complex puzzle! The challenge of designing true conceptual based lessons is one that is complicated but always fun! Along with being awarded the Newcomb Award from the UW, Joey was also selected to present his masters work at the 2018 UW research symposium. His research focus was on mathematical creativity. A recent focus of Joey's has been to use research based instructional methods to positively support creativity in the mathematics classroom. Because evidence suggests mathematical creativity has a positive relationship to mathematical ability, it is crucial that the pedagogical techniques that teachers implement should support mathematical creativity. Each day Joey looks forward to being involved in his student's learning and growing as mathematicians. Often, his students are the ones who are teaching their innovative and exciting new ways to solve mathematical quandaries.
